Jason Kuhn

Managing Partner

Jason has been a successful serial entrepreneur for the past 25 years. During that time, Jason has completed 21 transactions totaling more than ~$700 million in value. He has formed more than two dozen businesses which include ventures in automotive retailing, insurance, technology and real estate development. He is a seasoned business operator with acumen in extracting value from both high performing companies as well as distressed organizations. His companies have won awards of distinction for achieving outstanding customer satisfaction, as well as operational excellence.

Jason served three years as chairman of the Volkswagen National Dealer Council, and more recently, successfully led the Volkswagen dealers’ negotiating team that extracted a record ~$1.2 billion settlement against the manufacturer for their actions in the diesel fraud case.

Jason, who began his career as an M&A tax consultant for KPMG in their New York City headquarters, has a strong transactional background. He holds a Business Administration degree from the Olin School of Business at Washington University in St. Louis, a law degree from Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University, and an LL.M. in Tax Law from the NYU School of Law.

Jason also funds treatments and raises awareness for pancreatic cancer. As the former Chairman of the Board of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN), he has spent more than 15 years investing in, and fighting for, better treatment options for survivors. He continues to serve on the PanCAN board, which is based in Los Angeles.

Jason resides in Tampa, Fla., with his wife Courtney and their four children.

Steve Torres is an accomplished high-tech executive with more than 20 years of leadership experience, including senior roles at mid-market technology companies to Fortune 250 companies. Steve has a unique way of combining his entrepreneurial thinking and passion for leadership with execution, rigor and operational excellence. He has built powerful teams and companies, delivering industry-leading results and strong revenue growth.

Steve is the former COO and President of Services at Vology, a strategic technology solutions provider. He joined the company when it was in serious financial and operational distress and transformed it into one of the world’s largest technology solutions providers. Steve’s business and entrepreneurial experience helped him grow Vology’s revenues from ~$17M to more than ~$170M.

Steve has managed turnarounds, hyper growth situations, and business transformations across four industries. He is an expert at building strong leadership teams and high-performing cultures, creating innovative strategies, scaling operations and leveraging technology to optimize profitability.

During Steve’s 10-year tenure at Vology, he:

  • Achieved revenue and EBITDA CAGR of 25% and 40%+, respectively resulting in Vology being named one of Inc. 5000’s Fastest Growing Companies in each of his 10 years, a distinction that only 0.1% of companies achieved.
  • Built a strong leadership team that created a high-performance culture that led to unprecedented employee engagement scores, averaging 75.
  • Prompted and led four successful acquisitions/integrations generating $100M in new revenue.
  • Raised $240M in growth capital through multiple transactions.

Prior to Vology, Steve held senior finance roles at Tech Data, a technology distributor and service provider, and Jabil Circuit, a global electronics solutions company. He also helped prepare Syniverse, a transaction processor for the world’s largest mobile carriers and providers for its IPO.

Steve currently serves on the Board of Directors for SunTrust Tampa Bay, Prove, Shield Watch, Webinfinity and is a member of the Heart Ball Cabinet. Steve earned his B.S. in Accounting from the University of South Florida and his MBA from Regis University.

Steve lives in Tampa, Fla., and enjoys spending time with his wife Melissa and their daughter Sammi.

Courtney McDermott Kuhn

Managing Partner

Courtney is a highly recognized expert, human capital and operational advisor and leader in the retained executive search and financial services industries. Over the course of her 25-year career, she has advised heads of investment banks, alternative asset management and private equity firms; CEOs and boards of directors; and consulting firm partners on their human capital, growth, M&A, and operational strategies.

Due to her outstanding track record, she has developed long standing client relationships. Most notably, for 17 years, she advised McKinsey & Company on talent strategy and acquisition and held internal roles at the firm where she grew multiple practices, both in and outside of the U.S. She carried this relationship forward by continuing to advise many of the partners of the firm when they later became corporate CEOs or leaders within private equity. While working with McKinsey, she grew the BTO practice from a startup with five consultants in North America to the second largest practice in the firm globally. For three years, she worked with the leadership of the RTS practice during its inception and grew the practice across multiple geographies. She advised the President of McKinsey’s Investment Office on staffing and developing a Private Investments offering for MIO, and has worked with the Corporate Finance and Financial Services practices of the firm, among others.

Additionally, Courtney and her team built the global strategy function for Mondelez, a global consumer packaged goods/snack foods company. She has built M&A industry coverage teams for various money center global investment banks, and also advised the Board of Directors, COO and CEO of First Republic Bank on successfully recruiting the successor to the CEO.

Over the past 20 years, in addition to managing her search firm, Synergy-Search, Courtney was a principal in Heidrick & Struggles’ Chicago and New York offices and was a member of the Global Financial Services Practice and the Global Technology and Services Practice where she served investment banks, asset management firms, private equity firms, private banks and consulting firm clients.

Between 2006 and 2008, Courtney led the HR and recruiting functions for Z Capital Partners, an alternative asset management firm and distressed private equity manager which at the time had ~$1.5 billion AUM. In this role, she led senior executive searches for the firm and was also responsible for executive management team assessment and recruiting for portfolio companies. She is also an active trader and trades equities and futures contracts.

Courtney holds a B.S. degree from Indiana University.

Courtney currently lives in Tampa, Fla., with her husband Jason and their four children. She is actively involved in the arts and is a strong supporter of The Art Institute of Chicago and The Tampa Museum of Art.
